I took as much care writing the Sound Sketches piano pieces (early grades) as I’ve done with any other works of mine – to me they are as ‘serious’ as anything I’ve written; whilst at the same time being a fun way of playing piano in an imaginative and creative fashion. And as these Sound Sketches pieces circulate around they are starting to crop up more on video, and in festivals etc. Catherine Leach has been using these pieces with a lot of her pupils and as some of them played these works at the recent Crosby Music festival I’d like to mention them here! So thanks to Catherine and to her pupils Maggie (Secret Prelude); Joshua (Lonely Guitar); Grace (Paris Valse); and Jessica (Tumblers).

Pájaros del Mar for flute and harp. It’s great to have Christina and Elisabeth play this piece again as they’ve made the flute and harp versions of three of my tangos very much their own – working them into a small set of pieces. Alongside their work as principles of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra they’ve often performed as a duo, and they included the three tangos on their gorgeous CD ‘Encantamiento.

Petenera for harpsichord. Petenera takes its inspiration from a series of poems by Lorca – I’ve also written a choral piece Graphic of the Petenera which draws on the same source and which was first performed by the BBC Singers. This harpsichord piece was first played by Rebecca Pechefsky in the USA. Francis played it last year on the clavichord, but as far as I’m aware this is the first UK performance on the harpsichord.

This piece was commissioned by Las Sombras for their last CD ‘Casino Tango Noir’, and a glance down this page will show just how busy and successful they are! I’ve known Las Sombras for a few years now and I visited Florian Gutmann and Simone Graf in Germany, although I’ve not had the opportunity to hear the group live. This is the third CD they’ve put my music on – previously they’ve recorded Citron and Milonga Azure, and then Eurydice Sings.

Elizabeth (flute) and Andrew (cello) have done great things in getting this piece better known; partly from the many performances, as well as a video broadcast from the Kennedy Centre, but also from their first fine CD which is also called Terra Voce. I know if I receive an email from another flute and cello duo who want to know how to find the music that they’ve comes across the piece through Elizabeth and Andrew’s playing.
