Serenata Notturna for guitar orchestra – premiere in Finland

Many thanks to the Avonia Music Institute in Finland for commissioning a work for their guitar orchestra which was premiered at the Turku Conservatory last Saturday. It was a fascinating commission to fulfil because they wanted each of the three movements to explore specific intervals. So I fashioned the melodies of each section from precise interval combinations (e.g. 2nds and 7ths) so that the work had both a musical and pedagogical function with each player hearing the intervals whilst learning their parts. And I’m grateful for the fantastic cooperation of the guitar tutors there, especially Rody van Gemert (happy birthday Rody!) and Antti Ignatius. Video to follow…
