Sappho Fragments

I’ve long been an Ancient Greece addict, and in the last few years I’ve enjoyed reading the translations of Diane Rayor and have always wanted to set some of them to music. This wish finally comes to fruition today, with the first performance of a song cycle, ‘Sappho Fragments’, for soprano and piano. This will take place in the USA at the Dept. of Classics at Charleston College, amongst a couple of days of lectures and musical performances. Diane will be lecturing there as well.

I’m very grateful to composer and pianist Paul Sanchez, and his wife Kayleen, for this performance as well as for their meticulous preparation of the music.

I love this poetry! Over two thousand years old, and yet speaks to us as if it had just been written.
