The Penzance Youth String Orchestra are one of the best young string ensembles in the country, regularly appearing at national music events in London and Birmingham. They are lucky to have an inspired and tireless director, the viola player Tim Boulton. For a number of years now I’ve discussed with Tim the idea of composing a piece for them, but it’s taken me a long time to discover the music I wanted to write. But the process finally comes to fruition tonight when they give the first performance of a work I’ve composed for them (‘Serenata’), as part of the Golowan Festival.
I know many of the players, and have taught some of them composition, and they are such a great bunch of young people! As well as hugely talented, with many going on to study music at university or conservatoire.
