Recently, in Cambridge, pianist Yukie Smith performed ‘Beyond the River God’; a set of five pieces which was the title work of Assi Karttunen’s recent harpsichord CD. It’s the first time it has has been played on piano. Although I couldn’t be at the concert Yukie has posted a recording she made later on Youtube.
I gave Yukie a score with no dynamic markings and suggested she recreate the music on piano in any way she wanted to, which she did wonderfully, and with a really nuanced and thoughtful performance.
The music re-visits aspects of earlier French rondeau/couplet form, but within an expanded 20 minute time frame where the piece flows into itself as it reaches its conclusion. Follow the link for the audio.
